Ékorce Kombucha: How an Abitibi Brand Is Building the Next Generation of Functional Beverages

This series is presented by PivoHub

The kombucha boom may have cooled, but the category is far from finished.

Over the past decade, kombucha has followed a familiar trajectory seen across the beverage industry: rapid growth, an influx of new entrants, market saturation, and eventual consolidation. While some producers disappeared and others retreated to their regional strongholds, a handful of brands used the slowdown to rethink their positioning and prepare for a more mature market.

Among them is Ékorce Kombucha, the Val-d’Or-based company that has quietly transformed itself from a regional kombucha producer into a broader wellness beverage platform.

Speaking with Les Affaires Brassicoles during SIAL Canada 2026 in Montreal, co-owner and president Yan Lapointe reflected on the company’s evolution and why the future of the business extends well beyond kombucha alone.

Surviving the Kombucha Correction

When kombucha first entered the mainstream, it was often marketed as a niche health product associated with yoga studios, natural food stores, and wellness-focused consumers. As the category expanded, major beverage companies entered the space, investment capital poured in, and hundreds of brands emerged across North America.

Then reality arrived.

The pandemic disrupted retail channels, consumer habits shifted, and many smaller producers found themselves fighting for increasingly limited shelf space.

“Like many businesses, we thought everything might stop overnight,” says Lapointe. “We were fortunate to maintain our listings and continue building from there.”

For Ékorce, survival came from understanding something many brands overlooked: trends evolve, but consumer needs remain.

Instead of focusing exclusively on kombucha’s functional benefits, the company began repositioning itself around a broader lifestyle narrative centered on outdoor activity, active living, and everyday wellness.

The move was a natural fit for a company based in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

“Our reality is different from Montreal or Toronto,” explains Lapointe. “We’re surrounded by forests, lakes, cycling trails, skiing, and outdoor recreation. That’s the environment where our products are consumed.”

Today, Ékorce’s branding reflects that identity. Gone are many of the visual cues traditionally associated with the kombucha category. In their place is a more contemporary aesthetic designed to appeal to consumers looking for healthier beverage options without necessarily identifying as wellness enthusiasts.

Building Beyond Kombucha

One of the most significant developments for the company has been the launch of Kombustible, a line of tea-based energy drinks.

The decision emerged from a fundamental question facing many beverage entrepreneurs: Is a single category enough to sustain long-term growth?

“We asked ourselves whether we could build the future of the company solely around kombucha,” says Lapointe. “The answer wasn’t entirely clear.”

What was clear, however, was the explosive growth occurring within functional beverages.

Energy drinks remain one of the fastest-growing segments in the beverage industry, yet many consumers are increasingly seeking alternatives to conventional products loaded with synthetic ingredients, excessive caffeine, and high sugar levels.

Kombustible was developed to occupy that middle ground.

Using tea- and coffee-derived caffeine, real fruit ingredients, cane sugar, and maple syrup, the brand offers an energy beverage aimed at consumers who might not traditionally purchase energy drinks.

“Our target customer isn’t necessarily someone already drinking conventional energy beverages,” Lapointe explains. “It’s someone looking for a boost while still feeling good about what they’re consuming.”

The strategy reflects a larger industry trend. Across North America, consumers are increasingly gravitating toward products that combine refreshment with functionality. Adaptogens, botanicals, mushrooms, probiotics, and natural stimulants are becoming common ingredients in a category once dominated by traditional soft drinks.

“The future is clearly moving toward functional beverages,” says Lapointe. “Consumers still enjoy sparkling drinks, but they’re looking for products that offer something more.”

A Production Advantage in Northern Quebec

One of Ékorce’s less visible strengths lies in its manufacturing capabilities.

The company continues to operate alongside Microbrasserie Le Prospecteur, one of Quebec’s most respected craft breweries. Sharing infrastructure has allowed both businesses to benefit from purchasing efficiencies and operational synergies that are often difficult for independent beverage producers to achieve.

Those efficiencies matter more than ever.

With rising packaging costs, inflationary pressures, transportation challenges, and ongoing uncertainty around North American supply chains, every operational advantage counts.

Lapointe points to simple examples.

By consolidating purchases and sourcing larger ingredient volumes, the company can significantly reduce costs. Strategic supplier relationships also help avoid some of the tariffs and logistics complications affecting businesses dependent on U.S.-based supply chains.

These decisions may seem minor individually, but collectively they help maintain competitive pricing without sacrificing product quality.

In a market where margins are increasingly squeezed, operational discipline can be as important as product innovation.

Looking Beyond Quebec

While Ékorce remains deeply attached to its Abitibi roots, the company’s ambitions have expanded considerably.

The current production facility provides capacity well beyond present demand, creating room for future growth through new distribution partnerships, export opportunities, and potentially co-packing relationships.

SIAL Canada represented an important step in that process.

Throughout the event, Lapointe met with distributors, importers, and potential international partners. Several discussions extended far beyond their scheduled time slots, highlighting the growing interest in Canadian functional beverage brands.

“The foundation is already built,” he says. “Now it’s about scaling what we’ve created.”

For many emerging beverage companies, growth often means choosing between authenticity and scale. Ékorce is attempting to demonstrate that both can coexist.

The company remains proudly rooted in Val-d’Or while simultaneously pursuing opportunities across Canada and abroad.

The Future of Functional Beverages

If there is one lesson from Ékorce’s journey, it is that categories rarely stand still.

Kombucha may have opened the door, but the broader opportunity lies in creating beverages that align with changing consumer expectations around health, wellness, and lifestyle.

The next generation of beverage companies will likely be defined less by individual categories and more by their ability to adapt to evolving consumption habits.

For Ékorce, that means continuing to innovate while staying true to the principles that built the brand in the first place: real ingredients, approachable flavors, and a strong connection to place.

From a small operation in Val-d’Or to conversations about national distribution and international exports, the company has already traveled a considerable distance.

The next chapter may take it much farther.
