25 years old, it’s trippy
L’Écart was founded by a group of visionary artists who wanted to inspire the dissemination and production of contemporary art in our region. Gradually, the center developed and presented exhibitions, residencies and events promoting research in the visual arts while opening up to interdisciplinarity.
For example, project 555 has five cities, five artists and five locations; actions served on windows which, in 2001, linked on the Internet virtually 5 artists in action in the 5 MRCs, the great symposia of contemporary art realized by the exhibition centers of the region in collaboration with L’Écart, the challenge of an inter-national TRAFFIC touring art event in 2005, a performance festival that turns into a performative or even paranormal Christmas party called Paranoel.
Few of our members and artists are aware of the important role that photographer François Ruph played in the founding of the Visual Arts Artists Council of Abitibi-Témiscamingue (CAAVAT), a group that created L’Écart. As Marthe Julien said in an article published in the magazine Inter about the 10th anniversary of L’Écart:
« Par un beau dimanche d’automne, un artiste-rêveur-humaniste-barbu invite la gang d’artistes de la région à une réunion dans un camp en bois rond. Objet : constitution d’un regroupement d’artistes. Quel après-midi! Ceux qui y étaient s’en souviennent. On le fait-tu, on le fait-tu pas… vous savez qu’avec les référendums, on n’est pas trop trop sûrs de nos affaires… Finalement, le Conseil des artistes en arts visuels de l’Abitibi- Témiscamingue a pris forme. La forme de quelques volontaires missionnaires. (On en a travaillé une shotte.) C’était en 1989. En 1992, changement de cap : l’art actuel devient le centre de notre univers. Pas facile, “en région” ».
This dream-humanist-bearded artist was actually François Ruph. You will find in this program some of his shots as a nod to the work done upstream, marking at the same time the young history of our city.
To celebrate this 25th anniversary, a special program to which we invite you has been designed including exhibitions, residences, student laboratories, round table and cabaret.

Residences of the 25th / Main Hall
In a context of exploration and testing, artist members of L’Écart of all generations will make short duo residencies. The particularity of these periods of creation lies in the succession of residences that will take place in the same space. It is in this facility that other activities such as a round table, student labs and a cabaret will be held later.

Digital Arts students from the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue
Under the supervision of the teacher Jean-Ambroise Vesac (Rouyn-Noranda), in collaboration with UQAT’s Espace Lab, students will set up a digital laboratory in the main room of L’Écart. They will then produce new digital works for 4 days from images captured in the results of the residences of the 25th. The works produced will be broadcast on the Web through screenings at L’Écart or listening to sound clips.

Under the supervision of the teaching artist Gaétane Godbout (Rouyn-Noranda), founding member of L’Écart, visual arts students from Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue s’ will be part of the 25th of L’Écart. More than twenty of them will perform a work that triggered the archives of the artist center. They will first discover an event or an exhibition that challenges them and will face the challenge of creating a work based on this research.

L’Écart fête ses 25 ans : où serez-vous dans 10 ans? Projections délirantes
En 1991, soit l’an moins 1 de L’Écart, lors de la rencontre du Conseil des artistes en arts visuels de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (CAAVAT-1989), Paul Lussier écrivait La Rupture du moule. Il se réjouissait de la fondation d’un organisme de soutien à la création en arts visuels dans une région du Québec et allait contribuer à briser le moule centraliste, le centre étant Montréal.
Plusieurs acteurs, déjà là ou arrivés par la suite, ont contribué à créer un écosystème soutenant la création en arts visuels : cégep, université, centres d’exposition, symposiums, galeries d’art. Mais avons-nous réussi à briser le moule?
Dans les aujourd’hui de l’Internet, je propose une table ronde à l’heure de l’apéro sur des projections délirantes : où serez-vous dans 10 ans? Artiste de la relève, directrice/directeur d’institution d’enseignement ou d’institution muséale, enseignante/enseignant, artiste chevronnée/e s’y frottent. Et s’y piquent?
