Niagara College is launching a new initiative designed to lower the failure rate of entrepreneurs in the beverage sector — a market widely recognized as highly competitive and difficult to enter.

Developed through the college’s Food and Beverage Innovation Centre (FBIC) and Business and Commercialization Innovation Centre (BCIC), the program offers Canadian SMEs comprehensive support ranging from product formulation to commercialization strategy. The goal is to better guide companies through the critical stages between the initial concept and market launch — a phase where many startups fail due to technical, regulatory or financial barriers.
Participating companies will gain access to specialized infrastructure including the Beverage Pilot Plant, a small-scale production facility that allows businesses to test, refine and validate recipes under conditions that closely replicate industrial production. Services include scale-up support, shelf-life testing, regulatory compliance and process optimization.
The initiative is backed by funding of up to $75,000 through the National Research Council of Canada’s IRAP program, allowing participating companies to access technical and commercialization support at a reduced cost while accelerating product development.
According to Niagara College representatives, only a small percentage of new food and beverage products successfully reach commercialization, highlighting the importance of structured support during the early stages of development.
Beyond technical assistance, the college also provides guidance in branding, market analysis, and business strategy, combining scientific expertise with commercial development. The integrated approach is designed to reduce the risks associated with launching new products while improving entrepreneurs’ chances of long-term success.
At a time when the beverage market is increasingly saturated — from functional drinks and RTDs to craft products — programs like this could play a major role in shaping the next generation of Canadian beverage brands.
By focusing on applied innovation and industry partnerships, Niagara College continues to position itself as a key player within Canada’s agri-food ecosystem, particularly in beverage processing and commercialization.
